I am a Data Scientist, mum, wife, astrophysicist, Cosplayer, content creator, public speaker, crafter, sci-fi nerd, and amateur singer/dancer (VERY amateur at dancing). My varied background and different hobbies give me my unique view and way of doing things.

I currently work as a Senior Data Scientist in the consulting arm of Teradata Australia in Canberra. My blog isn't associated with the company I work for. I have always had a passion for solving problems, be them coding problems, technology problems, or life’s problems. During my
PhD my team had an abundance of data, from a southern sky galaxy survey, and we were slowly working through the data reduction process to identify spectral components. For the team to finish this process it would have taken someone 3 years so complete this by eye and if the previous steps in the data reduction had to be updated it would have to be repeated. I had always been interested in machine learning and suggested we try that avenue to do this work for us. I built an Artificial Neural Network from the ground up to tackle this eye watering process for us. Using trained data, from myself and my team, I built this ANN to select the right spectral components of the survey in just 8 minutes, instead of the 3 years. It’s still in use today. This was my big step into how much I love using machine learning to take on tasks that we humans don’t have the time to do. I moved to industry at the completion of my PhD in Astrophysics to focus my career on data science.
